CONNECTIONS to the Cold War |
Through the Invasion of Grenada, the themes of the Cold war are highlighted. |
Communism vs. Democracy
The invasion of Grenada directly connects to the theme of the Cold War: communism vs. democracy. Through the United States' actions, this theme was highlighted. The invasion was primarily for the restoration of democracy in a time where a government was overthrown by communists.
In this case, the invasion shows not only the conflicting ideologies, but the conflicting perspectives of the war as well. Bernard Coard had thought that he was acting in favor of the country in installing communist ideology by overthrowing Maurice Bishop; however, from the United States point of view, a communist Grenada presented danger to the US citizens, students, and nation itself. The invasion reflected these perspectives through physical and ideological conflict.
